The Melange Hypothesis

Theobroma cacao (literally “Food of the Gods”) paired with melatonin — a 5-substituted tryptamine in the same chemical family as 5-MeO-DMT (the God Molecule) — creates a powerful delivery system for one of the most ancient and ubiquitous molecules on Earth.

Modern artificial light, especially blue light from screens, chronically suppresses natural melatonin signaling. We hypothesize that high-dose rectal melatonin can pharmacologically restore a strong “darkness signal” to the brain and peripheral tissues, even while awake. This may allow the body to engage in critical nighttime processes — mitochondrial repair, antioxidant defense, inflammation resolution, and cellular maintenance — without requiring behavioral sleep.

Sleep remains essential. However, this approach may partially decouple restorative physiology from the need to be unconscious, potentially expanding daily functional time and recovery capacity.

Common Misconceptions

Melatonin is widely misunderstood as merely “the sleep molecule.” In reality, the vast majority of melatonin is produced and used inside our cells as a potent endogenous mitochondrial antioxidant. Claims of dependence or tolerance are not well-supported by evidence.

Melatonin Facts

  • 5-substituted tryptamine — Same chemical family as 5-MeO-DMT
  • One of the oldest known molecules — present in every organism studied
  • Primary role: powerful mitochondrial antioxidant
  • No known LD50 — extremely safe even at high doses
  • Radioprotectant and protects against NSAID-induced damage
  • Supports muscle recovery and systemic repair
